New York Eminent Domain Attorney and Owners’ Counsel Representative, Michael Rikon, to Participate at Annual Property Rights Conference

The Owners’ Counsel of America is pleased to announce that Manhattan-based condemnation lawyer, Michael Rikon, has been invited to speak at the 10th Annual Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Conference in Williamsburg, Virginia, October 17-18, 2013.  Mr. Rikon, a partner at Goldstein, Rikon, Rikon & Houghton, P.C. and the New York member of Owners’ Counsel of America, will take part in a round-table discussion regarding the impact of recent U.S. Supreme Court property rights decisions.

The Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Conference is sponsored by the William & Mary Law School Property Rights Project.  W&M’s Property Rights Project promotes the exchange of ideas between scholars and practicing attorneys through lectures and the annual conference, which is renowned for its outstanding panels including members of the bench, bar, and academia.  Each year, the Project recognizes the outstanding contributions of a single individual to the field of property rights scholarship and awards the Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Prize. The 2013 Brigham-Kanner Property Rights Prize will be presented to Thomas W. Merrill, the Charles Evans Hughes Professor at Columbia Law School.  For a list of previous prize recipients, click here.

Both the Conference and Prize are named in recognition of property rights attorneys Toby Prince Brigham and Gideon Kanner for their lifetime contributions to defending the right of private ownership, their efforts to advance the constitutional protection of property, and their accomplishments in preserving the important role that private property plays in protecting individual and civil rights.  [Disclosure: Toby Prince Brigham and Gideon Kanner are OCA Honorary Members and Brigham is a founding member of Owners’ Counsel.]

“I am honored to be invited to speak among such a distinguished group of property law scholars and lawyers,” said Rikon. Mr. Rikon will participate on a panel tasked with considering whether recent Supreme Court decisions in Arkansas Game & Fish Commission v. United States, Koontz v. St. Johns River Water Management District, and Horne v. United States Department of Agriculture simply clarify or shift the direction of takings law.

“I hope to be able to contribute the perspective of an active condemnation trial lawyer to these discussions,” said Rikon.  “Hopefully, my background of 44 years of eminent domain litigation will provide some insight to the practical effect of these cases.”
